Western Hognose snakes are small, stout-bodied colubrids famous for their "upturned" snouts and dramatic personalities. Native to the prairies and shrublands of North America, these snakes are primarily fossorial, meaning they love to dig and tunnel. Reaching typical lengths of 14 to 36 inches, they are hardy, long-lived, and make incredible display animals in a bioactive habitat.

Hognose snakes appreciate floor space for roaming and deep substrate for burrowing.
Enclosure Size: A 20-gallon long terrarium is the standard minimum for an adult male, while adult females generally require at least a 40-gallon breeder to allow for a proper thermal gradient.
Substrate Depth: Because they are natural diggers, provide at least 3–5 inches of substrate to encourage natural tunneling behavior.
Cohabitation: Hognose snakes are solitary. Housing them together causes significant stress and can lead to predatory behavior. Always house them individually.

Hognose snakes require a distinct warm side and cool side to regulate their body temperature.
Temperature: The basking area should reach 90-94°F. The ambient temperature should sit in the mid-70s to low 80s.
Nighttime: Turn off all heat and light at night. A nighttime temperature drop is completely natural and healthy.
UVB Lighting: While Hognose snakes can survive without it, they truly thrive with it. We recommend a low-level linear UVB (such as a T5 5% or 6% ShadeDweller).
Plant Lighting: To keep your live plants thriving in a bioactive setup, a full-spectrum LED plant grow light is essential to support the ecosystem.

Western Hognoses prefer a lower ambient humidity (30-50%), but they absolutely require access to "micro-climates" of high moisture to shed properly.
Hydration Options: Standard plastic or ceramic water bowls work for basic hydration, but they often sit "on top" of the environment. Our Custom Natural Stone Bowls go a step further; because they are made from real sandstone, they naturally wick moisture into the surrounding soil. This creates a hidden "oasis" for your Isopods and Springtails to congregate and breed, while also providing a slow, reliable drink for nearby plant roots.
Humid Hides & Shedding: You can use a plastic "Tupperware" hide with damp moss to help your snake shed, but these can look out of place in a naturalistic tank. By soaking our Custom Natural Stone Caves, the porous rock holds the moisture for you. It creates a localized, humid retreat that looks like a natural part of the landscape and won't mold like plastic-and-moss setups often do.

A bioactive setup allows your Hognose to engage in its most natural instinct: shifting soil.
Substrate Choices: Many keepers use Aspen shavings or simple topsoil mixes. While these allow for digging, they often fail to hold the shape of a tunnel or provide the nutrients needed for a long-term bioactive cycle. For a truly functional ecosystem, you need a mix that supports both plant life and the "Clean-Up Crew." Our Premixed Bioactive Soil is formulated to be sturdy enough for permanent Hognose tunnels while staying airy enough for roots to grow.
Décor: You can use cork bark or resin hides, but we recommend heavy, textured stone. Our Custom Natural Stone Caves provide a secure hiding spot that won't shift when your snake burrows under it, and the rough surface acts as a natural abrasive to help your snake start its shed easily.
The Clean-Up Crew: A bioactive tank isn't complete without the "janitors." We carry a variety of Isopods that break down waste and keep your soil healthy and cycling.

Western Hognoses are famous for their "feeding strikes" if they aren't comfortable, which is why a secure, bioactive home is so beneficial for their confidence.
Diet: In captivity, they do well on a diet of appropriately sized frozen/thawed mice.
Frequency: Hatchlings usually eat every 5 days, while adults eat every 7–10 days.
Note on Relocation Stress: Hognoses are sensitive to change. If your snake refuses food for the first week or two, don't panic. Give them space and avoid handling until they have successfully taken 2–3 meals.
Supplementation: Occasionally dust prey items with a high-quality calcium and multivitamin powder to ensure they receive a full spectrum of nutrients.
